True Winning: The Psychology of Authentic Success
It was a late summer evening in Belfast when I sat across from a young peace activist in a small café. His eyes were shining, even though he told me about a tough day—once again, a dialogue project had failed, and the sides seemed stuck. “But you know what,” he said with a smile, “today I got one step further than yesterday. That’s my win.”
In that moment, I truly understood what Dr. Dennis Waitley meant in his groundbreaking work The Psychology of Winning when he spoke about “true winning.” It’s not about defeating others. It’s about something much deeper.
What True Winning Really Means
True winning is about using your talent and potential—what you were born with and what you’ve developed over time—to fully pursue a goal or purpose that brings you joy and fulfilment.
Over the years, I’ve come back to this truth again and again: Real winning isn’t about competition. It’s about authenticity.
Winning means becoming the version of yourself you dream of being—the version that feels whole, confident, and aligned with who you truly are. In my coaching work, I often see people shaped by external expectations instead of listening to their inner voice. True winning means having the courage to become who you truly want to be, not who others expect you to be.
The Power of Giving and Receiving
True winning happens in a space of trust, care, collaboration, and social responsibility.
In leadership retreats I’ve led around the world, one thing stands out time and again: The most powerful leaders are the ones who empower others. They understand that true winning means growing together.
The Small Wins of Everyday Life
True winning often shows up in small, everyday moments:
- When you stay open to others.
- When you choose not to complain.
- When you flip over every card in Solitaire, without cheating.
- When you pick up a beer can on the beach, even though you didn’t drop it.
These may sound small. But they reflect something powerful: Integrity starts with you—even when no one’s watching. True winning means doing the right thing, not for recognition, but because it matters to you.
The Transformative Power of Your Attitude
True winning is being at peace with who you are. And that might just be the hardest win of all. In a world full of comparisons, social media filters, and pressure to perform, being content with yourself is nothing short of revolutionary.
In my coaching sessions, that’s always the turning point—when you start to see your value. When you realize: You’re enough. You’re worthy. Just as you are.
Winning is a mindset. A conscious choice. A way of life. As Dr. Waitley put it: “Winning is all about attitude!”
The Answer Lies in Your Attitude
Your attitude is the key—or the lock—to your personal growth and success. You can’t always control the circumstances around you. But you can always choose how you respond to them.
After years in leadership across Germany, the Middle East, Canada, and Greece, this has become one of my core truths: You can’t change everything. But your attitude changes everything.
When I return to Belfast soon to prepare the Dialogue for Peace 2026 I’ll bring that belief with me: Everyone can win—not by beating others, but by making an authentic, honest contribution that helps us all move forward together.
Play to Win—for Real
Winning is a habit. And that means you can choose to win—every single day. Not through competing, but through growing. Not through comparing, but through being real. Not through taking, but through giving.
As a coach, leader, and human being, I invite you: Play to win—for real. Play to become who you truly are. Play to empower others. Play to make a difference.
Because true winning isn’t the end of a race—it’s the beginning of a fulfilling life.
A Reflection for You
Which part of true winning speaks to you most deeply? Where could you begin today to “win” in a new, more meaningful way?
Would you like to align your leadership with this kind of authentic winning? In my coaching sessions and leadership retreats, this is exactly the kind of transformative mindset we work on together.
